Winter Drought & National Water Strategy

One of the driest Autumns on record offers prospect of another Winter drought - the second in the last three years.

This puts into focus the Environment Agency's ongoing consultation for developing a national Water Resources Strategy, the UK-RHA input to which can be down-loaded from the Press section of this site.

In brief, it is the Association's contention that the proposed strategy pays insufficient attention to the contribution that could be made to reducing demands on highly stressed water resources by substituting harvested rainwater for mains-water for non-potable uses such as toilet-flushing.

Environment Agency field trials have shown this mains-water saving to be as high as 50% in households - rising to as much as 80% in office blocks and other commercial buildings.
